This is basically a continuation from my post on Friday afternoon. Enjoy!
**I’m going to preface this follow up review by saying that if you're reading this and still haven't seen Batman v Superman. (1) I thank you but (2) you really to reprioritize things. So yeah, this will contain spoilers so if you haven't seen the film yet then come back some other time to read this.** I had mentioned in my previous review that I was in-between seeing Batman v Superman for the first time and the second time. After seeing it a second time I decided to pop back on and give my thoughts.
My second go around left me liking the film a lot more than I did the first go around. After initially seeing it for the first time my knee jerk thought was thank god I’m seeing it again today because I thought it was a lot to process. Looking back, I may have been subconsciously fearful and anxious about all the negative reviews so the second I felt like I was more relaxed. I still have my issues with the film. Since my second viewing I’ve been very intrigued with the dream sequence in which The Flash visits Bruce Wayne in one of his many wild dreams. Major Foreshadowing that leaves us with something to marinate on till November of 2017 when we see the Justice League. Also the scene on the helipad with Lex & Superman interacting is so damn awesome! Sometimes the verbal battles are even better than the physical ones nowadays. I still think that Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman is the best thing this film has to offer. Being the Batman fan that I am I should probably take more of an issue with Batman's tactics but I guess I just kind of accept it. I view this Batman as a hero who is kind of on the edge and maybe a little tired of playing by even his own rules. I will say that if an eventual solo film is a prequel that I'd expect Batman to not toss the rule book out the window as carefree as he did in BvS. No matter what criticisms come with this film there is still plenty to enjoy.
I was worried about my girlfriend who is a bit of a novice when it comes to the DCU. She was really looking forward to the movie but I was wondering if it would be too much for her to process. I was worried that with all the moving parts that maybe it would be too cluttered for her and in turn be a lackluster experience. She thankfully loved the film and gave me a few thoughts on the car ride home. Those thoughts she had taken away from the film were…
1. It jumped around too much.
2. She could have “done with all the monster stuff at the end”.
3. Ben was a great Batman and like most of us wants to know when the solo film will happen.
4. She loved the Aquaman cameo and is enthusiastic to see a film set under water.
5. She still isn't ready to talk about Louis Lane & Clark Kent.
It was really interesting to see her enthusiastic reaction to Aquaman. Seeing her reaction kind of got me to think that Aquaman may ultimately be better received than some of us might have anticipated around the time he was announced to be included in the DCU. As far as that fifth thought, Yeah she still can't talk about Clarks demise without getting emotional. Understandable and funny to me all at the same time. I do agree much like I said in my previous review that the jumping around made it feel like the pacing of the film was kind of off kilter as well as my thoughts that the Doomsday sequence felt a bit over the top. As over the top as I may have thought the final fight scene was it is not nearly as over the top as I think the collective media has been on the overly harsh reviews. I will debate with anyone who thinks this film is a flop. It has its shortcomings no doubt but in no way shape or form is this film a failure. If someone truly thinks that then they don't know the genre well enough and should stop expecting oscar worthy films when seeing comic book films. Not every comic book film will be a Dark Knight much like every mob movie isn't the Godfather. Writers really need to come to grips with that. I’m glad to see on twitter that the fans for the most enjoyed this film cause at the end of the day that is who really matters.
I still give it a B- as I continue to wish that Zack Snyder could learn to pace his stories a little better. I’m willing to bet the eventual directors cut dvd release will make the film gel a little better. I do think though that this film is meant to be seen twice and it gets better. I will see it for a third time in the next couple of days and still being worried over the Media and their thrashing of this film I’ll be keeping a close eye on its box office returns over the next two weekends. I deem this a worthy launch pad for the rest of the DCU and any scrutiny that is being thrown upon the DCU will be washed away on August 5th when the Suicide Squad comes to town.
Cheers.
